Like a snowflake, we’re all different. I tell my son this every day. You see, he’s autistic, and he’s at the age where other kids KNOW he’s not like them. That’s okay, we are educating everyone we meet. So when I had the chance to check out Periwinkle’s Journey, I was excited. This book celebrates that everyone is different!
Author Judy Petersen-Fleming stole my heart in her book, Periwinkle’s Journey. I guarantee, she will steal yours too! You see, Periwinkle is a beautiful blue penguin that has lived her whole life in Australia. One day, she gets a letter from her cousin Crystal in Antarctica. It just so happens to be a birthday party invitation. Crystal wants Periwinkle to journey to Antarctica to celebrate her birthday and to meet all of her other penguin cousins.
Periwinkle embarks on the very long journey. Before she leaves, mama gives her a special knitted hat to keep her warm, and an even more special necklace to help her feel brave. Once Periwinkle gets to her cousin’s she realizes she is very different from her cousins. Crystal assures her it’s okay to be different, because what fun is it to be like every one else?
Perfect for your children, preschools, and elementary children
This story will teach all children that being unique is okay. It’s a perfectly precious, and fun way to reinforce this lesson for all younger children. I think this book would be great in the home, as well as in the classroom. It will open the door for a discussion on inclusion for all, no matter their differences. The illustrations are the cutest! If you’re familiar with Suzy’s Zoo, then you’ll love them too, because Suzy Spafford illustrated this book.
