Educational background

Like all engineering careers, you need to have a strong education background in order to perform their tasks. The major emphasis is in the subjects of mechanics, electronics and mathematics. The job is technical in application and as such, the automobile engineer must have a technical analytic mind. An automobile engineer should hold a degree in relevant courses and conversant with subjects, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and automotive engineering.

An automobile engineer can work just about anywhere cars are. You can work at a car manufacturing plant, have your own garage, in the race circuits and just about anywhere that cars are involved. As a garage owner, you can offer a wide range of services that go beyond making repairs and replacements. You can specialize in any aspect of automobile services including restoring old cars and providing professional vehicle inspection for various purposes. If you work in the production aspect of automobile industry, you can expect to work in shifts. Other duties may see you work standard eight to five jobs. Depending on the capacity of your role, you can work in an office, at a manufacturing plant or at a research facility.

  • You must have an interest in motor vehicles and on how they work. This is a core consideration as you will work with cars for long hours on end and you must have the passion to deal with them.
