National Nurse Appreciation Week – Thank You Nurses

Thank You To All The Nurses

that go above and beyond to make life #BetterforBaby every day

#ThankYouNurses program celebrates the essential role nurses play during the first few minutes, hours and days between newborns and their parents.

The first annual Thank You Nurses campaign, in partnership with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), honors nurses across three award categories: Labor & Delivery, NICU, and Postpartum. Three nominated finalists were selected and are being honored with short documentary videos showcasing their unique and inspirational nursing agency work and stories.

To celebrate National Nurse Appreciation Week in May, Pampers Swaddlers is announcing a grand prize nurse honoree to acknowledge her dedication and commitment to making life better for babies and new parents. The grand prize honoree will be featured in an upcoming Pampers advertisement placed with AWHONN.

Labor & Delivery nurse, Anne Gallagher, was selected as the Pampers Swaddlers #ThankYouNurses Award Grand Prize honoree! Anne is a nurse at the University of Illinois Hospital, focuses on empowering moms to form special bonds with their newborns. I gave birth three times and oh my goodness I don’t think I would have got through my first week without the nurses at the hospital.  My first son was born 26 years ago, but I can still remember my nurses that helped me all night and then came back to check on me when they came back to work.  I was young and didn’t know quite what I was doing, and I remember an older nurse helping me swaddle my newborn son because that seemed to work.  She walked me through the steps I swear 30 times with the patience of a nun! She was so sweet and was my main nurse.  When I left the hospital, she packed up so many diapers, blankets, and formula for us.  She also called a week after I was home to help me with the breastfeeding.  My son probably wouldn’t have got breast milk if she didn’t help me find a nursing nurse to come to my house to show me the ropes.

When I had my 2nd son, it was the scariest thing EVER!  I had an emergency c-section and was in so much pain; it was so hard to hold my baby.  The nurses helped me figure out how to care for him while I was still in pain.  They showed me so many tricks on how to carry and how to take care of myself.  It was incredible how much they cared; I know it is their job but they made me feel like I really cared for my family. I was in the hospital for five days and even though that was long I didn’t want to leave because I had so much reassuring support that I didn’t know if I would be able to do it without help.

With my 3rd child, we had a planned c-section, and that went very smooth, and I knew how to deal with pain from before.  However, I had another obstacle to conquer.  My daughter was born with extreme clubfeet.  We didn’t know until she was born and oh my when the doctor told us she might never walk; my nurse held my hand the whole time while talking to the doctor.  My daughter was in casts her very first day of life, and the nurses fell in love with her.  I had to figure out how to feed her with these two casts covering both of her legs and feet.  The nurses threw my daughter a little going away party; it was so sweet.  One nurse, Julie kept in contact with us for a couple of months to make sure we were doing good and how to deal with my postpartum depression I fell into after this birth.  I also had my tubes tied, so it was going to be my last child.  I was a mess, but the support I got from my labor and recovery nurses was just amazing.  Nurses are real special people, and they will always have my respect.
