The Makey Makey Classic is billed as an invention kit for everyone and is meant to help people tap into their inner inventor. It’s a humble little device that turns just about anything into an input device. Something with almost unlimited uses whether it be in the hands of an elementary school student or a PHD candidate.
Plug the device into a USB port, you may be asked to install drivers or do another setup. Click cancel or close the window. Connect an alligator clip to your new controller, hold the metal part between your fingers. You are now grounded. While you are still grounded, touch the round space pad on the Makey Makey. You should see a green light and your computer will think the spacebar was pressed. If you click in the text area below, you can make the cursor move. You can also complete the circuit by connecting another alligator clip.
So many thing that you can do with Makey Makey – so easy to use and so much fun to be had. Try out different materials and make anything into a key. You can make a connection through anything that’s even a little bit conductive. Here are a few things that you can try – most fruits and vegetables, marshmallows, gummy candies, macaroni and cheese, cupcakes, shrimp and lots of other things. You can try plants, leaves, flowers but nothing to dry. Play-doh, model magic and any other type of clay works really well as long as they stay moist. Did you know that people are conductive also? Connect one person to ground and another to the input and you can trigger all types of sounds by high fiving, clapping, snapping any type of movement.
Makey Makey works with any software that uses your keyboard or mouse. Bongos, piano, MK1, canabalt, scratch piano, tetris, sound effects of all types. This makes for an amazing Christmas gift for the inventor in your family. I have had so much fun trying different things with my grandkids. Great fun to be had and all types of combinations to try.
