Memory foam, which is also less commonly known as visco elastic polyurethane lather, is an insulating material that reacts to changes in environmental temperature. It basically works by changing its shape to form a cushion around the device it is protecting, once it is subjected to warmer climates.
Although it is presently used in many middle-class homes, the substance was first engineered for use in astronautic maneuvers; to release pressure from g-forces during lift-off. The engineering of the first product was in 1960, by chemists at the NASA research center. The main aim was to create a material that would provide support to the pilots, and cushion them, preventing the creation of pressure points. The resultant products were the types of foams discussed.
Since then, the substance has undergone numerous modifications, and its uses have expanded. The prices for it have also become progressively lower compared to yesteryear’s. Some of the more common places you can find it being used is for the manufacture of mattresses, mattress toppers and pillow cushions. They are, in essence, replacing conventional mattresses, which are rigid and flat.
The cells that are used to make the material are heat-sensitive, causing them to be firmer in cooler temperatures and softer in warmer climates. Once the cells of the material come into contact with a warm surface (such as a human body) they soften at the edges. This is crucial in enabling it to support the pressure points of the body.
Uses of Memory Foam
More than fifty years after the development of the foams that were used to cushion rocket space pilots, it has found diversified usage, and has become a household item. The major uses of the foams are centered on the manufacture of super-comfort mattresses, mattress toppers and pillows. Mattress toppers are a little thinner than a mattress, and are used to add comfort to a conventional mattress, and to improve its quality.
The mattresses of this type are essentially some of the most comfortable mattresses in the world today, since they adjust to a person’s body shape. They distribute your weight evenly, which leads to continual cosiness for your body. Pillows made from the material are a good deterrent for neck strains.
Pillows and cushions have also been made from the foams, and are becoming more popular in many households (especially names like the “>Tempur Cloud). There are cushions for different functions, including neck rests and armrests for chairs. The cushions can also be used in your personal car, as well as in your office.
It has also been found useful in the footwear industry. Slippers made from the material are widely used in many households, and offer more comfort than normal slippers. With the rate at which these products are being manufactured, it won’t be a surprise if we heard of memory foam shoes and boots!
Currently, when staying healthy is on everyone’s list of resolutions, it is probably wise if you invest in memory foam products to reduce some of the strain that your old mattress is causing. People who purchase these types of products often never look back.
