Hidden Household Dangers You Should Get Checked

Doctors recommend you get a physical checkup now and then. They make sure your heart rate is okay, that your blood pressure and weight are healthy, and so on. It’s a great way to make sure everything is working as it should.

But what about your home? Your home is made up of several systems all working together round the clock. There’s ventilation, electricity and plumbing all keeping you cool, clean and entertained. There’s also your walls and roof giving you constant protection against the elements.

Often, if there’s a problem with any of these, people don’t realise until it’s too late. This causes massive inconvenience and cost. This goes double if you end up having to leave your home while repairs take place. Just as you get your body inspected, it’s worth getting your home inspected from time to time. If you want true peace of mind at home, you should make sure your building is completely safe.

HVAC

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. That these systems are installed and working impeccably is crucial. Heating will stop you from freezing, and air conditioning stops you from overheating. The ventilation system ensures that carbon dioxide goes out and oxygen comes in. This keeps your air fresh. If it malfunctions, the air can cause sickness and allergies.

You’re probably using your HVAC system all year, making it one of the hardest working systems you own. To keep everything running smoothly, make sure you have it professionally serviced twice a year by a technician. You should also make sure you replace the filter at least once every three months.

Roof and walls

Through rain and snow, wind and heat, these are the things protecting you and your family. They’re always exposed the elements, so there’s a danger of erosion and weakening. In particular, problems may develop on the roof. This is because they take the bulk of the punishment during harsh weather.

It’s tough to say when inspections of these should take place. It may be worth having them looked at at least once every couple of years. But what if there’s been frequent inclement weather? You may want to look into roofing companies for a quick inspection of the roof above your head.

Plumbing and electric

Maybe it’s happened in your home before. It’s early morning and someone grabs a shower. While they’re in there, the water temperature plummets to freezing. In surprise, they scream and wake everyone up! But a problem with plumbing can be a lot more serious than everyone being woken up in the morning by a surprised family member.

Plumbing problems can cause hygiene issues. If they don’t function, you can’t clean yourself properly. If filtration isn’t working correctly, damaging substances could be getting into your supply. Getting a plumber to run a routine inspection on your house is one of the more affordable inspections you can get, so it’s highly recommended.

You should also get an electrician to inspect your electrical systems. Though unlikely, an electrical fault could cause a house fire. An electrician will be able to check plug sockets, wiring and devices to make sure they’re not presenting a hazard to you and your family.
