Halloween is in a few days, and I wanted to share with you a few tips to treat and protect your pet this Halloween. I love dressing up the littlest pup in a cute outfit and, of course, showing everyone how cute he looks. He loves the attention he gets, and we just love how cute he is. I also love to do a few things to make sure my pets are having fun, but at the same time keeping them safe on Halloween. Below are a few ideas for you.

Keep Your Pets Indoors

Bring your pets indoors before night falls. Cats are always safest inside with you, but on Halloween it’s especially important to secure all pets inside. Sadly, there are cruel people who have twisted ideas of fun this time of year – and your dog can be the victim. We keep our dogs inside, with all the children walking around and cars going up and down the street, our pets can also get scared.

Be Cautious With Pet Costumes

I know we love to see our little pets in costumes, but there are a few things you should always remember, if you do choose a costume for your pet, forgo masks, anything that covers eyes or ears, and everything that might tangle in your pet’s legs. Also, make sure the costume is comfortable and allows your pet to move freely. Don’t forget to remove any chewable parts or objects that could come off and choke your pet. And always remember, if your pet looks uncomfortable, take off the costume!

Halloween Candy

Remember that human treats are not usually good for dogs! Candy, especially chocolate, can be extremely toxic to your dog. Artificially sweetened candy, gum and other goodies may also contain xylitol, an extremely toxic substance. Other treats can cause upset stomach or maybe even a choking hazard. Keep the candy up high away from your pets.

Give Your Pet A Treat

There are so many pet treats on the market, have some around to give to your pet as a special treat. You can even make your homemade treats for them, like pumpkin pie dog biscuits, peanut butter dog cookies, sweet potato flour biscuits. There are so many healthy treats you can make for your pet.

Every year we dress up our dogs in costume and celebrate Halloween. But always remember, while dressing up can be fun, responsible pet owners should never trick themselves into believing their dog is immune to harmful illnesses that cannot necessarily be seen, like heartworm disease. Did you know that Heartworm disease is spread by infected mosquitoes, is potentially fatal but is also very preventable? Just one bite from one infected mosquito can transmit potentially fatal heartworm disease.

Pets need annual heartworm tests and year-round prevention to be safe. I have six dogs, and even though our vet bill can be huge, we always make sure our pets are protected and healthy. We keep all their shots up to date and we make sure we have them on a heartworm preventative like ProHeart6®.

ProHeart6® is an easy and convenient way to keep dogs protected. ProHeart6® is a 6-month injectable heartworm product, it is one of the best things we can do for our pets. We no longer have to remember to give them their pills every month! Now we know our pets are protected for six months. One place we take our dogs to is Banfield Pet Hospital®. We have taken them for their annual Heartworm test and protection. Banfield Pet Hospital’s® Optimum Wellness Plan® help to support overall pet health, and specifically heartworm prevention, by offering Heartworm preventives, including ProHeart6®, as add-ons to the plans.

So this year, have fun with your pets on Halloween, but also remember to protect your pets from Heartworm and keep them healthy.
