My family travels quite a bit. Do my kids like driving in the car for hours? No way! I have learned a few things that make traveling with kids almost hassle free. It takes the stress off of you and the kids are not so bored. Always plan ahead when you’re traveling with your children, below are a few tips that should help you.

Pick the Time to Leave – I know we usually leave either early morning or late afternoon. It depends on if your thinking of driving right through or planning to make stops. Sometimes leaving to early in the morning is not the best option when it comes to younger children, they tend to get grumpy if they do not get enough sleep. So pick a time that is good for you and the children.

Taking Breaks – Road trips can make anyone tired! Take a break every few hours. This way everyone can get out of the car and stretch their legs and bodies. Plan your breaks out ahead of time. This way maybe you can stop somewhere that would be fun and enjoyable for the children. Breaking up the trip helps keeps everyone in good moods and the kids will be so much happier.

Plan Bathroom Breaks – This is something that can’t always be planned out ahead of time. But taking bathroom breaks will make everyone feel so much better. You will feel better stretching your legs and the kids will love to be able to get out and maybe run around a little bit. Try and plan to stop at rest stops that have a play area, so the kids can get some much-needed exercise after sitting in the car for long periods.

Keep Kids Occupied – Keeping a variety of toys and games flowing is always helpful when you are traveling with kids. Observation games like “I Spy” work well, while movies and video games pre-loaded on a mobile device will work once they tire of the former activity.

Road Trip Snacks – Pack snacks, this way you’re not stopping and spending more than you need to. Packing a cooler with water and drinks for the trip will make the road trip so much more enjoyable. You will always have something on hand for the kids and yourself to either drink or eat. Pack sandwiches, fruits, and veggies. This way you’re not stopping at fast food places and you all can eat a little healthier.
