If you are like me and know a DJ you know , they are always going to be into music. It is their blood, and love everything that has to do with it. From the radios, to the speakers and any and all cds.
When I was anble to add to our cd collection with the cd Bessie, I jumped at the chance. A new cd to listen to as we are going our traveling. An HBO Films presentation, Bessie stars Oscar® nominee Queen Latifah (“Chicago”) in the title role and focuses on legendary blues singer Bessie Smith’s transformation from a struggling young vocalist into “The Empress of the Blues,” one of the most successful recording artists of the 1920s and an enduring icon today. Throughout the years, Bessie Smith has served as an inspiration for such illustrious singers as Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Nina Simone, among others.
An evocative collection combining historic and contemporary recordings, Bessie (Music from the HBO Film) debuts seven new Queen Latifah performances including “Young Woman Blues,” “Preachin’ The Blues,” “Long Old Road,” “Down Hearted Blues,” “Work House Blues,” “Weepin’ Woman Blues” (a duet with vocalist Pat Bass) and “Gimme A Pigfoot and A Bottle Of Beer (2015 Remix),” a postmodern reworking of Bessie Smith’s original recording featuring newly recorded vocals, ad-libs and raucous banter by Queen Latifah set to enhanced instrumentation remixed and produced by Adam Blackstone and Queen Latifah. “Gimme A Pigfoot and A Bottle Of Beer (2015 Remix)” is a dream collaboration between the Empress of the Blues and Queen Latifah that exemplifies the brilliance of each of the artists while celebrating the musical soul that unites their eras and generations.
The album features modern performances of blues, jazz and swing classics including “Prove It On Me,” performed by Carmen Twillie; “See See Rider,” performed by Tamar-Kali; “Laugh Clown Laugh,” performed by Cécile McLorin Salvant; and two new instrumental arrangements from Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks: “I’ve Got What It Takes (But It Breaks My Heart To Give It Away)” and “Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight
We love to listen to all kinds of music and love to have a great variety of different kinds of sounds, its relaxing to just drive and sing along or just listen to the sound on the speakers.
Carey did release a handful of pretty, paint-by-numbers ballads and uptempo pop/R&B hits that were played mercilessly by radio and VH1 for short period back in the nineties. So where are those original hit recordings? In a revisionist move, the versions of “Someday” and “Fantasy” that were actually #1 are replaced with inferior alternate versions.
The collection combines her Sony work to her biggest songs from Island. The collection though is honestly Mariah’s best hits collection for newcomers to her career, but not for die-hard fans, who have bought her past hits collections. The collection does include her biggest songs like Dreamlover, One Sweet Day with Boyz II Men, Hero and My All. The cavalcade of songs also does include some of her work from Island, which briefly ignited her career on We Belong Together and Don’t Forget About Us, and one of her lackluster songs Touch My Body. The collection does include one new song from Mariah, Infinity, which is more of a breakup song that is in regards to the end of her marriage to Nick Cannon that really doesn’t ignite overall from the way her songs did before. Overall, the song being more like a filler than igniting from her heart, the way her songs used to.
We have loved her for many years, and I can remember driving and singing her songs all the time. Each of the 19 tracks on here, is testament to her talent to sing every lyric with intense passion and soul. Regardless of music styles, she shines on every note. She has brought too much to music to be dismissed: her voice, charm, great beats, old-school taste, interesting featurings. As the undisputed, youngest all-time best-selling female artist, an accomplishment in itself, MC may have long fallen from grace, but she remains elusive, indeed, entertaining, glorious, accomplished, unsurpassed, timeless. “#1 to infinity”, is essentially a reminder of her greatness.
