Fixing A Flat

Fix That Flat: Common Sense Tips For Using A Tire Jack

The most common reason why you need to jack up your car is to change a flat tire, though it can be required for other jobs as well, such as inspecting the brakes etc. Lot of people get seriously injured or even die after being crushed under an improperly jacked car every year. So, the next time you need to use a tire jack, follow these common sense tips to do your job more safely and efficiently:

  • Always remember that jack is used only to lift the car off the ground. You should never use it to hold the car up in place. Jack stands are specifically made for that purpose.
  • Never jack up the car without blocking its wheels to prevent it from rolling. Wooden wedges, bricks and metal wheel chocks are used for this purpose. If any of these things are not available at present, you may block the wheels by parking near the curb and turning in the wheels.
  • The car should be parked on level ground before jacking it up. If the flat tire happened on a hill, you can park close to a curb, turn wheels towards it and block its downside wheels to prevent any rolling.
