Five Furniture Styles to Try at Home

With so many different styles of furniture available, it can be difficult to pinpoint which one you want to embrace.  Take a quick look around your house, and you can usually determine what style of furniture you tend to lean towards. Chances are it is one of the following basic types.

  1. Traditional

Traditional furnishings are the most widely used today, and can readily be seen in magazines or in furniture showrooms. It’s likely the style you grew up with. Couches and chairs are usually upholstered and give a homey ambiance. Nothing shouts “look at me,” but instead it is functional. The fabrics tend to be basic with small, unobtrusive patterns such as damask and brocade. Leather is also quite common.

  1. Coastal

Nothing shouts relaxation better than coastal furnishings. They are generally made of natural fibers like wicker, and come in whites, greens and blues. It can include nuanced items like seashell encrusted tables and woven rope baskets. The style is not limited to a beach house and can work in any casual home.

  1. Bohemian

Also known as boho, the bohemian style is known for its vibrant, rich colors and layers of texture. Couches tend to be plump and made with heavy woven fabrics. There are generally plenty of pillows and other textiles. The style is meant to convey a carefree attitude.

  1. Mid-Century Modern

In contrast is the clean, sleek mid-century modern style, which takes its cues from as early as the 1930s. At the time, new materials were being created and designers were quick to embrace the use of plastic, vinyl, and Plexiglas. The new components allowed for a new range of colors, including bold hues. The styles remain popular today; well-made copies are an affordable way to embrace this straightforward style.

  1. Transitional

This category includes a little bit of both modern and traditional. There are often clean lines, like the mid-century pieces, but there are also traditional elements such as carved wooden legs or large pillows in bright colors.

Don’t feel limited by a furniture category; there is no rule that says you must keep with only one. In fact, it is quite common to see a mixture of styles that have been blended together to create a comfortable, yet stylish, presentation. Even if you stay within one type, you can still mix it up a bit. If you have a lot of light furniture, add a solid chair to add some balance. If you use a lot of one color, add a splash of something bright to lighten it up.
