Red wine has long been prized for its deep crimson hue and palette of flavors, but doctors and nutritionists alike are just beginning to understand its health benefits. Moderate daily intake of red wine has been clinically shown to improve cardiovascular function, and a 1992 Harvard study even named regular consumption of red wine as a proven way to reduce risk of coronary heart disease. This effect is credited to the antioxidants present in the grapes used to make red wine.
This benefit is known as the cardioprotective effect, and is ascribed to the antioxidants present in the grapes used to make red wine. Antioxidants work to reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing the body’s concentrations of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol while stimulating production of “good” cholesterol, or HDL. Red grape antioxidants also reduce blood clotting to facilitate smoother cardiovascular function.
Daily red wine consumption also elevates the body’s levels of an antioxidant known as resveratrol, which has been linked with inhibited tumor growth with some types of cancer. Resveratrol also plays a significant role in the formation of healthy nerve cells, which may be helpful in the fight against neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Dry red wines typically have a greater concentration of beneficial compounds, and so bold, well-developed wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Petit Syrah have the most pronounced potential for health benefits.
The benefits of red wine are evident, but an important note is that the amount taken in daily has an impact on its health effects. Men should drink up to two four-ounce glasses of wine daily while women can consume a single glass to reap the maximum health benefits of drinking red wine.
Of course, overconsumption of red wine or any alcoholic beverage brings its own health concerns, including possible malnutrition from lack of other nutritious foods, and so significantly higher intake levels are ill-advised.
Thanks to the multiple health benefits of red grapes, red wine presents a variety of health benefits to those who enjoy it daily. However, there is a point of diminishing returns when any alcoholic beverages are overconsumed, and so as always, the key is moderation.
