Professionals recommend that you replace your mattress every eight years. Most people don’t do this. As your mattress ages, it will slowly start to give you a lower quality night’s sleep. Many don’t notice as the process is so subtle and drawn out. But it’s so important to replace your mattress. You might not notice the difference as you slowly become more and more uncomfortable in your bed. But you will definitely notice when you try out a new mattress in direct comparison to your old one. There’s more to know about finding the best mattress for you than you might think. Here are some things to mull over and bear in mind.

Do I Really Need to Change My Mattress?

Some people doubt that they need to change their mattress as often as every eight years. It is believed that your mattress doubles in weight every eight years due to the collective added weight of dust mites and other dirt that accumulates from people and pets sleeping on beds. Check your mattress warranty. This will be on the label attached to the mattress. If the warranty is ten years, you should almost definitely replace after ten years. When it comes to buying a new mattress, never go second hand. What’s the point? Purchase from reliable brands. Preferably those that have a good review on BestMattress-Brand.org.

Choosing A New Mattress

Support

Start with support. This is the most important part of buying a mattress. The core of your mattress provides support and there are four main types: spring, foam, latex or air.

If you like your bed to have a bounce to it, you will probably want to opt for an innerspring mattress. You can choose how bouncy you want your bed to be. The springs are made from metal coils. The largest will be 12 gauge. These will be the firmest and thickest. The smallest will be 18 gauge. These are thinner and more compressible. People who weigh more tend to prefer the 12 gauge, whilst lighter people tend to prefer the 18 gauge. The most durable type of spring mattress is made of interconnected springs. However interconnected springs can create a ripple effect when someone on the other side of the bed moves. To prevent this effect, you might like to consider individually pocketed springs.

If you like an extra firm, supportive base, you should try out foam mattresses. Memory foam has boosted in popularity over the past few years. Foam mattresses don’t really sink beyond the top layer when you sit or lie on them.

For those who like to feel buoyant, the latex mattress may be the way to go. They are very similar to foam mattresses when it comes to firmness. However, they will bounce back more. Natural latex mattresses are often cleaner, as they are resistant to dust mites and mold. They will be expensive but will last around twenty plus years, so are well worth the investment.

Perhaps you like to have a different firmness to your partner. Then customisable air mattresses might be for you. Many have two chambers, one for each side of the bed. This means that your side can have a different level of support to that of your partner’s. The top surface will be similar to that of spring mattresses, so you won’t feel like you’re on a blow up airbed.

Hi Nancy, It’s really hard to find proper info about mattresses. You really cleared up a lot of things for me. If you have a recommendation for pillows, I’d be willing to listen to that as well.
