There are some appliances that a modern home can’t be without. A refrigerator with excellent temperature control features ensures that your food is being kept in the right temperatures. We all need an oven that heats up evenly and quickly, and a stovetop that’s large enough to hold your regular pots and pans. There are a lot things you need in the kitchen, but there’s one appliance that isn’t essential, but still makes cleaning a lot easier: the washer and dryer. You could wash all of your clothes by hand, or you could even take them down to the Laundromat, but having a washer and dryer in your home can make cleaning a lot easier
Even though washers and dryers aren’t essential, having one breakdown can be a big pain to deal with. Some end up leaking water and causing water damage to the floor, and others end up causing steam, smoke, and small fires because of electrical problems. A lot of things can go wrong with your washer and dryer, but there are some repairs you may be able to make to solve some of the most common problems people have with their washers.
Problem: The door won’t open on your washer
If your washer door won’t open at the end of cycle don’t spend too much time looking at the closing and locking mechanism. A lot of door opening problems for washers are actually a drainage problem. A lot of washers will automatically lock if it detects that the water remains in the drum in order to protect against water damage. Even if you don’t see any water in the drum, there could still be water in the drainage pipes that hasn’t properly drained. If water drainage is the problem, try setting your washer to the spin cycle to try to drain some of it out. If this doesn’t work, you’ll have to drain it manually.
Problem: The washer leaks water
If you have a washing machine that has its door on the front of it instead of on top, your leakage is most likely caused by the door improperly sealing when the cycle starts. The leaking could also be the result of a water pump having a bad seal. The other cause could possibly be because of a bad gasket. If the issue is the water pump you may be able to seal the leak or replace the entire pipe, but if the door isn’t sealing correctly you’ll want to have a professional repairman seal the door.
Problem: The machine won’t spin or tumble
If your machine is on but won’t move, there’s probably a problem with the belt. A loose, snapped, or worn belt can easily be replaced. If the belt is the problem, you’ll hear the machine’s motor running when the machine isn’t moving like it should.
Advice for affording a repairman
Some people reading this may be able to fix the problem themselves, but some of these repairs will need to be fixed by a professional repairman. There are plenty of websites that sell Whirlpool parts, belts for GE washers, and LG tumblers. If you want to save money on repairs, pay for the broken part in your machine and only hire them to install it.
So if you are a fanatic of DIY projects or someone who just loves the challenges of fixing their own home equipment then you can definitely repair your washer with these options. But if you feel that your washer’s problems are beyond your expertise and you’d feel more comfortable seeking help from a professional then go ahead and give them a call.
