Credentials for Counseling Careers

Looking for employment in the current economy can lead to disappointment and frustration. Even having a bachelor’s degree does not guarantee that a position will be available. Many former students have found that the jobs that are available after receiving their undergraduate degree are barely enough to support themselves. In addition, they often find it difficult to pay back their student loans on the salaries that they are offered.

Working towards a Master of Arts in Counseling or a Master of Arts in Human Services can result in a valuable degree. It is important to have the credentials when looking for employment in the current economy and they can both also pave the way for exciting career opportunities. Caring individuals that would like to make a difference can do so while working with families and individuals who need compassionate support for a variety of issues. Counseling people with clinical issues is a little different than counseling those children in school. That is why Wake Forest University and other schools offer classes either online or on campus for several different Masters Programs for counseling. Two different Master of Arts in Counseling are offered; one for clinical mental health and one for school counseling.

The Master of Arts in Counseling for clinical mental health is geared towards crisis intervention and treatment of various mental health issues. The program consists of around 60 credit hours of coursework and clinical practice with supervision to prepare for meeting clients in professional practice. The Master of Arts in Counseling for school counseling is geared towards training to counsel school age children and learning how to spot children that are in crisis or in need of someone to talk with. This program also combines coursework with clinical practice. Both programs provide the training needed to obtain the appropriate license or certification.

The Master of Arts in Human Services is for those who do not want to be licensed or certified, but want to gain the education for their career advancement. An example of people who may want this type of program could be; human resource directors, business managers, coaches, teachers, law enforcement personnel and more.

My son is thinking about going into the counseling field. I didn't realize that there were so many different options.
