I have the perfect holiday gift idea for the ale, wine or any libation lover on your shopping list. The book, Colonial Spirits – A Toast to Our Drunken History, by Steven Grasse, will make their holiday! Read on to learn why.
So, when I first read the title, I immediately thought of ghosts. My family loves the paranormal, so I guess that’s why my brain went there first. That’s not what it’s about though. Colonial Spirits – A Toast to Our Drunken History is actually a fantastic peek inside the barrooms and battlefields of the revolution. It’s pages contain stories behind our founding father’s favorite drinks, to the surprising origins of American wine, beer, rum, whiskey, and more! It’s a revolutionary drinking guide to brewing, mixing, serving and more. (By revolutionary I mean the time period, and because it’s a one of a kind book.)
A look inside
Readers of Colonial Spirits aren’t just going to get some fun history lessons. They’re going to get some recipes that date WAY back! For such things as Spruce Ale, Dandelion Wine, Icehouse Slosh and more.
A Cure for What Ails You
Back in the day, before the invention of modern medicine, they were looking for ways to treat the sick. Seeing what they gave them or took themselves is interesting. For example, the treated Consumption (which we now know to be Tuberculosis,) with branches of beaver tree, with rum or brandy. I wonder how they thought that would help?
For constipation they gave you a mixture of beer and peas. A cough was treated with wood sorrel berries with rum and brown sugar, which actually sounds tasty! Asthmatics were treated with sulfur dissolved in rum. That thought made me gag a bit, especially since I’m asthmatic and sulfur smells like rotten eggs!
