Beat the Heat This Summer

I have heard a few times already….It’s too hot to play outside! Instead of feeding my kids endless amounts of popsicles here are a few things we are going to try. Maybe your children will enjoy them too.

ICE CUBE PAINTING:

Pour water into an ice cube tray and add a few drops of food coloring into each cube. Once frozen, you can use the ice cubes to paint on the driveway, on canvas or on paper. If you are worried about making a mess, insert a toothpick into each ice cube before fully frozen. It makes a great handle. But in the summer time, making a mess is a big part of the fun so you may want to just let them grab the cubes and have a messy good time.

BIKE and TRIKE WASH

We do this every year. I give my children a few buckets filled with water, sponges and a tiny bit of soap. They wash their bikes, even some outdoor toys and offer their services for neighborhood friends too. They dress in their swimsuits and have a blast in our driveway for hours.

ICE BLOCK TREASURE HUNT

This activity takes a day or two to set up but it is so much fun. Fill a large plastic container with water about 1/3 of the way and add small toys and trinkets. Once that layer is frozen, add more treasures and water. When the entire container of ice is frozen, it’s ready for play. I let it thaw just enough to loosen the big block of ice from the container, give the kids spoons and let them dig. It is such a fun activity that keeps everyone cool.

Summer months go by so quickly here so we try to squeeze in lots of fun. What are your favorite things to do to beat the heat?
