Great news: Summer isn’t over just yet!
Although we’ve just moved into September, if you’re on the northern hemisphere you probably expected the weather to start cooling off, bracing yourself for the colder months ahead. But instead, some of us are lucky enough to experience yet another heat wave, an Indian Summer so to speak.
So while retailers all over the place have already stocked up on winter-appropriate attire, inviting us with lovely offers to turn our wardrobes colder-months-proof, we get to continue wearing our favourite summer clothes, shoes, makeup and fragrances.
So here’s a little collection of the fragrances that are ideal for this kind of weather and remain perfect for the months ahead.
Fragrances For Her
DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom
Donna Karan created a lighter, fresher, subtler version of her infamous Be Delicious perfume, this time taking inspiration from apple blossoms. But rather than like its ‘parent’ having a strong apply core, Fresh Blossom is using grapefruit, cassis and apricot for conjuring beautifully fresh, only slight citrus-y top notes which evolve into a more floral scent for middle notes stemming from jasmine, rose and lily of the valley.
It’s a perfectly light, crisp, floral meets fruity sweet, aquatic scent inspired by springtime but ideal for any sunshine-induced season!
Vera Wang Princess
While the name ‘Princess’ might initially be off-putting for some people, most likely the older generation, it totally goes with Vera Wang’s image of being one bonkers bird!
Luckily, that association with Vera Wang being bonkers, and the word ‘princess’ invoking an overwhelming image of pink and glitter in our heads, it doesn’t apply to this fragrance at all.
Yes, of course, it is very feminine – sweet (more so than Fresh Blossom), but from its combination of fruits (lady apple, apricot, pink guava) and flowers (water lily, wild tuberose, Tahitian flower) it becomes a fresh, almost aquatic scent.
But of course there’s a twist: the elements of mandarin meringue, dark chocolate, pink frosting accord, musk and chiffon vanilla give the fragrance a dessert- or candy store- like feel to it, but without being overpowering.
Fragrances For Him
Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey For Men
Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake created his ‘Water of Issey’ fragrance almost 2 decades ago and yet it remains one of the most popular scents around – that is if you like citrus-y, sweet fragrances for men (not that there’s anything wrong with that – clearly not considering the fragrance’s sales figures!).
A combination of spices (coriander, clary sage, saffron, nutmeg, Ceylonese cinnamon) as well as flower/plant extracts (cypress, cypriol, verbena, water lily, bourbon geranium) and other twists from tobacco amber, musk and Indian sandalwood, creates a citric, fresh, yet somehow mysteriously dark and energising scent.
Calvin Klein Crave
Yet again a slightly sweet, more feminine fragrance for men rather than the standard, masculine fragrances that will most retailer shelves. Fresh, light, slightly fruity, sweet, almost aquatic, crisp thanks to its deliciously unusual mix of palm leaf, bergamot, star fruit, basil, cardamom, coriander, sage and pimento berries married with darker, more sensual and yet somehow light notes of sandal, musk, birchwood, nutmeg and vetiver.
Fragrances For All
D&G Anthology Le Bateleur
D&G Anthology is a collection of 6 perfumes, which are all intended to be unisex. Inspired by tarot cards, they’re named after those using the French titles.
Although all fragrances are intended to be useable by both genders, Le Bateleur (The Magician) is the most masculine scent of the collection. The initial scent is a mix of cardamom and juniper berry, leading into a core of aquatic accord and coriander, and a finish of vetiver, olibanum, and cedarwood. So while it has elements more often found in fragrances for men, the juniper berry and olibanum (which is often used in incense) lend more fruity and sweet notes, to soften the ‘blow’ of the masculine fragrance.
