When it comes to home security most people only see money coming out of their pockets monthly. This doesn’t have to be true. There are ways to protect your home with out breaking the bank. Here are a few really simple tips on how to better protect your home and your family.
1. Common sense
The amount of people that leave their home during the day and either leave windows or doors, unlocked or opened is astonishing. Unlocked windows and doors are usually the very first thing that burglars look for when wanting to break into a house. Almost just as common are people leaving their homes with the garage doors open. Always make sure before pulling away that your garage closes fully. Open garages are the easiest and fastest way for a burglar to be able to grab something and run. When you are leaving town for a while make sure to be discreet about it. Do not post all over social media that you will be gone all week. Also before leaving town either set up a friend to pick up your mail or call the post office to hold your mail for you. You can also buy timers to turn on lamps and TV’s so that your house does not look unoccupied.
2. Become friends with your neighbors
One of the best home security devices is your neighbors, especially neighbors that stay home during the day. Get to know your neighbors so that you can be in mutual agreement to watch each other’s houses. Any time you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood make sure you call the police and let them know. Make sure and let your neighbors know when you are going to be out of town. This way they can walk around your house and check up on it every once in awhile while you are gone.
3. The Yard
Make sure that the outside of your home is fully lit. The most important places around your home to have lights shining are doors and walkways. Either having permanent lights or motion sensor lights in these areas will quickly run off a stranger in the middle of the night. Also in your yard you will want to make sure there are no tall and dense bushed for burglars to hide in. Lastly in your yard you want to make sure that all tress that are close to the home are cut back so there is no easy access to the roof or second story.
4. Guard Dog
Dog are great indicators when there is something suspicious going on in or around your home. Because of their acute sense of hearing, dogs can hear people approaching the home way before you can. Having a dog in a fenced yard will scare away any burglar when they approach the house.
5. Home Security System
Having a home security system is the all time best ways to protect you’re home rather than sitting on your porch 24/7 holding a rifle (which is not advised). I found a company called Smith Monitoring that offers some of the best features I have ever heard of. Smith Monitoring specializes in San Marcos home security and South Lake home security system. One of their greatest features they offer are their security cameras that you can view via live feed on your smart phone at any time.
