When you complete your move, it is a very satisfying feeling. You have everything unpacked and are settled into your new life. However, there is one little problem that you still have to deal with. You have a ton of boxes lying around, and like most folks, you are probably at a loss for how to handle them. Instead of adding them to your already overstuffed local landfill, try these five creative ways to reuse your moving boxes provided by Mark Yutz of Unicorn Moving & Storage in Austin, TX.
1. Let your kids make a fort
One of the most enjoyable ways to reuse your moving boxes is to let your kids make a fort out of them. They can create a huge fort with many rooms with all of the boxes you will have lying around after you are done unpacking. You can even paint the walls to make them look like a stone or wooden fort. You can use duct tape to help hold the structure together. Just be sure to build the fort inside if you don’t want to see it get ruined when it rains or snows.
2. Turn them into baskets
If you decorate your old moving boxes, you can turn them into giant baskets that are great for storing things. They will look great in the kids’ playroom when you turn them into baskets, and you can use them to store the kids’ toys away to help keep the room organized.
3. Make a lap desk
If you like to work in bed or you have kids who like to color in the car, then you will love to create a free lap desk out of an old moving box. You simply need to turn the box upside down to use it in this manner. Make sure that the bottom seam of the box is reinforced with a few extra applications of tape to keep it held securely flat. You need to cut away the top and parts of the sides to create four legs on each corner of the box.
4. Poster frame backing
Posters are flimsy. You have probably torn more than your fair share of them. To help keep them protected, you can use the cardboard from your moving boxes as a backing for framing the posters. You can either use the cardboard with a frame, or you can simply attach the poster to the cardboard and hang it up on the wall as is. When you use cardboard from your moving boxes to mat posters on, it will help to keep the posters flat. It will also keep them from curling up on the ends like they have a tendency to do.
5. Spill protection
If you are working on a messy project, then you can use your moving boxes as a covering to help protect your flooring from spills. The cardboard from your moving boxes makes an ideal floor cover when you are working on a car in the garage or driveway. This will help you to keep these surfaces from getting stained with oil or other automotive fluids. Cardboard boxes also make great floor covers when your kids are working on an arts and crafts project. You can also use them to protect your floors when you are painting.
